10 Reasons Home Cooks Are Putting Their Mason Jars to Work with a Hand Pump

You probably have a shelf of wide-mouth mason jars already. The PURE MVP is a hand pump and a set of stainless lids that turn those jars into vacuum storage: 7–10 strokes, about six seconds, and 80–85% of the oxygen is out. No batteries, no cord, nothing to charge. Here's why it's earning a spot in the kitchen drawer.

1. It puts the jars you already own to work

Any wide-mouth mason jar works with PURE lids.

There's no special container to buy and no plastic bag to cut open. The MVP system is built around the wide-mouth mason jar — the kind already sitting in most cupboards, whatever the brand. Set a PURE stainless lid on top, pump, and that jar becomes vacuum storage for juice, produce or pantry goods. When you're done, wash the jar and use it again. The Ready-Set-Go set comes with 12 lids, so a dozen of your jars can be working at once. Jars are sold separately, which means you only pay for the part that does the work.

Your jars were already there. Now they do more.

2. It pulls more vacuum than portable electric sealers

Pumping the MVP on a valved stainless lid
80–85 kPa, by hand.

Vacuum is the whole point, and this is where a well-built hand pump wins. The MVP pulls 80–85 kPa of vacuum, removing 80–85% of the oxygen from the jar. Portable electric jar sealers were measured at 10–50%. That makes the MVP capable of removing up to 8 times more oxygen than a portable electric unit. Less oxygen in the jar is the goal of vacuum storage, and more vacuum means you're not guessing whether the sealer did its job. You can even watch bubbles rise out of the juice as the air is drawn out.

More vacuum is the point. The MVP delivers it.

3. It's faster than an electric jar sealer

About six seconds per jar.

It sounds backward, but the hand pump is quicker. Seven to ten upward strokes takes about six seconds per jar. Electric jar sealers take around 40 seconds. When you're sealing a week's worth of juice or portioning a bulk bag of nuts into jars, that difference adds up fast. There's no waiting for a motor to cycle and no light to watch. Pump, lift off, next jar. Once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes a rhythm.

Six seconds a jar. Then on to the next.

4. No batteries, no charging, no cord

Nothing to plug in, nothing to recharge.

The MVP is a manual pump. There is no motor to burn out, no battery to fade, and no charger to lose in a drawer. The piston head is its only moving part, which is why it keeps doing the same job, stroke after stroke. It's quiet too — just a soft whoosh as you pump. And because it doesn't need an outlet, it goes wherever the jars go: the counter, the pantry, the cabin. When you're done, it fits in a kitchen drawer.

Nothing to charge. Nothing to wear out.

5. Juice once, drink it all week

Juices and smoothies: up to 1 week, refrigerated.

PURE started as a cold-press juicer company, and the MVP grew out of the question juicers ask most: how do I store it? Vacuum sealing fresh juice and smoothies in mason jars helps them keep up to a week in the fridge — about double the storage life. That makes a single juicing session on the weekend a realistic plan. Fill the jars, pump each one, and stack them in the fridge. Keep juice refrigerated the whole time, and drink the oldest jar first.

One juicing session. A week of jars.

6. Produce and pantry goods last longer too

Produce 1–2 weeks. Dry goods 2–4 weeks.

Juice is only the start. Fresh produce in a vacuum-sealed jar keeps 1–2 weeks, and dry goods such as nuts, grains, coffee and snacks keep 2–4 weeks. Because the lids reseal in seconds, you can open a jar, take what you need and pump it back down. Customers use it for berries, cut avocado, leftovers and bulk nuts. Keep anything perishable in the refrigerator; the vacuum slows spoilage but doesn't replace the cold.

Open, take some, reseal. Every time.

7. Lids built for serious vacuum

Setting a PURE stainless valved lid on a wide-mouth mason jar
Triple-thick stainless steel, silicone gasket.

Ordinary jar lids aren't built for this much vacuum; they can bend. PURE designed its own: triple-thick 0.4 mm #304 stainless steel with insert-molded silicone gaskets. They're made to be reused, not tossed after one use, and they're dishwasher safe. Wide-mouth only for now, sized to fit standard wide-mouth mason jars. Fill each jar to within about half an inch to an inch and a half of the rim, pump, and the lid holds.

Lids you keep, wash and use again.

8. Two lid styles, so it fits how you store

Valved lids connect directly. Plain lids use the PSA adapter.

Choose valved lids and the pump connects straight to the lid — no adapter, no lid key, and they hold slightly more vacuum. Choose plain lids and the pump connects through the PSA adapter, which PURE designed to fit the widest variety of mason jars possible. Plain lids have no valve to bump loose, so they're the better pick for jars that travel. Because the vacuum is so strong, plain lids come off with the included lid key.

Valved for speed. Plain for the road.

9. Built to last — and to be rebuilt

The MVP Service Kit: silicone grease and rebuild o-rings for the pump
Aluminum, stainless and silicone. Field-rebuildable.

The pump body is aerospace-grade aluminum with a die-cast leaf handle and a stainless steel pushrod; the seals are food-safe silicone. There's no BPA and no PFAS in the system. It's designed to be serviced instead of replaced: the MVP Service Kit has silicone grease and the pump's rebuild o-rings, and replacement lid valves come in packs of six. It's the kind of kitchen tool you buy once.

Buy it once. Keep it running.

10. It comes from the people behind the PURE Juicer

From the makers of the PURE Juicer.

PURE introduced the PURE Juicer, a cold-press juicer, in 2016. The MVP was designed by the same team, led by founder David Feinberg, and launched on Indiegogo in August 2024, where 442 backers funded $58,299. Across all PURE products, customers rate the company 4.9 out of 5 over 1,197 reviews, and 98% recommend it. Today PURE sells the MVP system directly, along with genuine lids, valves and service parts.

Same team. Same standards.
