Juice Pulp for Skincare

Perhaps this comes as no surprise to avid juicers, but leftover juice pulp can find its way into your skincare routine, too. Whether you’re eating the pulp in a delicious recipe or smoothing it on your face, it’s a fun way to use up every bit of your produce.

Here’s one of our favorite skincare recipes:

Juice Pulp Cucumber Face Mask

When you’re in the mood for a refreshing cucumber mask, look no further than your own test kitchen. We like to take the pulp from our cucumber-apple juice and combine it with aloe vera, honey, and rose oil. Why cucumbers? Cucumbers are hydrating, refreshing, and a source of antioxidants.

This glorious mask has the consistency of a good mud mask, so we recommend you apply the mask, put your feet up, and sip on that delicious cold-pressed cucumber-apple juice.

Ingredients

  • cucumber-apple pulp
  • 2 tbsp aloe vera (from a leaf or aloe juice)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 3 drops rose oil

Directions

Mix cucumber-apple pulp with the aloe vera, honey, and rose oil in a bowl. For an extra-refreshing treat, refrigerate the mask for 5-10 minutes before applying.

Juice pulp: good for cleaning

Is juice pulp good for cleaning? Sure! Just have to make sure you use the right kind of pulp. Lemons’ citric acid is great at removing soap scum, calcium deposits, rust, and hard water stains.

Juice Pulp Household Cleaner

In our test kitchen, we made a natural household cleaner with lemon rind, water, liquid soap, vinegar, and baking soda and found it to be quite effective (and smelled great, too). We recommend taking care when combining these ingredients–you may remember from school science projects that vinegar and baking soda cause an effervescent chemical reaction.

Ingredients

  • lemon rind
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 drops liquid soap
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Directions

Combine ingredients slowly. Alternately, get your kiddos involved and ask them to combine them quickly to see how many bubbles they can make!

Juice Pulp Wood Polish

Citric acid is also very effective when used as a wood polish. We used lemon rind, olive oil, vinegar, and a touch of lemon juice.

Ingredients

  • lemon rind
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup of vinegar
  • touch of lemon juice

Directions

Mix the ingredients together, and dip the edge of a microfiber cloth into the mixture. We recommend polishing with the grain of the wood, and going over the surface once more with a clean cloth.

Juice pulp: good for eating

Of course you can also eat fruit and veggie juice pulp! While we at PURE pride ourselves on the nutrient-dense juice the PURE Juicer made, we hate to waste the fiber-rich pulp when our bodies (and the bodies of our furry friends!) could put it to good use.

Dog Treats (and Human Treats)

These dog treats taste and smell so delicious, you may actually have trouble sharing them with your furry friend (they are human-friendly, too!)

Yield: two full cookie sheets of treats

Ingredients

  • ½ cup apple sauce
  • ¼ cup flaxseed soaked in water
  • 1 cup gluten-free oats
  • 2 bananas
  • ¾ cup peanut butter
  • ¼ cup pumpkin (optional)
  • 6 cups pulp: carrot-apple or carrot-apple-greens pulp broken into pieces

Directions

In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Add a little water if necessary. For chunkier treats, consider setting the pulp aside to blend the other ingredients, and, once smooth, blend in the pulp.

Spread a thin layer of the mixture onto a cookie sheet and bake slowly at 150 degrees for 45 minutes. Flip the layer over and cook for another 45 minutes. Cut into small pieces and store in the freezer until use. You can also use cookie cutters (see adorable heart-shaped treats below) or a cookie scoop and bake the treats the same way.

Pro tip: if you want these for YOURSELF, try spreading almond butter on them for a little extra flavor.

Juice Pulp Pasta and Pasta Sauce

Another of our favorite juice pulp recipes is the one we use to make pasta out of the juice pulp leftover from our colorful elixir series. You can make red pasta from beet and ginger juice pulp, green pasta from kale-broccoli-apple juice pulp, orange pasta from carrot and turmeric juice pulp, and purple pasta from red cabbage and apple juice pulp.

Ingredients

  • Juice pulp
  • All-purpose flour
  • Water (filtered water helps soften the dough)
  • Oil (olive or flax is preferred)

Consider adding some of the juice you’ve pressed into the pasta pot to replace some of the water used for boiling: this will enhance the color of your pasta!

You can also power up any of your favorite homemade pasta sauce recipes by adding juice pulp. Simply take the pulp from any of these recipes and add about a tablespoon to your homemade sauce.

Juice Pulp Tea

Our pineapple juice shots, made with oranges, lemons, ginger-turmeric, and pineapple, is one of the best things we have ever made in our test kitchen. Because the juice tasted so good, we immediately began working on ideas for how to use the pulp in other delicious creations. Our favorite so far? Citrus-ginger tea.

Directions

  • Fill your tea filter with as much pulp as you can.
  • Pour hot water into your teapot for steeping.
  • Add a little fresh juice to tea and allow to steep for another two minutes.

Pro tip: add star anise, cinnamon, and cardamon for extra spice and sweeten to taste.

Of course, the options are unlimited when it comes to the kinds of tea you can prepare with your juice pulp. This one just happens to be our current favorite, especially as we head into cool fall evenings!
