PURE Juicer Owners

PURE no longer makes new juicers, but we stand behind the PURE Juicers that are already in your kitchens with a supply of spare parts. This page puts everything an owner needs in one place: the manual, how-to videos, care and cleaning tips, service parts, and how to get help.

Manual and quick start

The PURE Juicer Manual

Quick start

  • Assembly. The juicer comes almost fully assembled. Install the feed pan and the pusher, and you are ready. When you take it apart to clean it, pay attention to where each part goes. The parts diagram is on pages 14 and 15 of the manual.
  • Attach the feed tube. Slide the feed tube gently over the cutter. Line up the line on the feed tube plate with the line on the machine marked "In." Turn the feed tube clockwise until it clicks.
  • Wash before first use. Wash all food-contact parts with soap and water: pusher, feed tube, feed pan, cutter, grid tray, grids and juice tray. Wipe the cutter dry. Rinse new press cloths and bags in cold water (soap is optional).
  • Keep the box and all the foam. The factory carton is the only safe way to ship the juicer if you move, sell it, or need service.
  • It is heavy. Get help lifting it.

Juicing tips

These are the methods the PURE team used and shared over the years.

  • The basic method. Wash produce in water with a little apple cider vinegar. Grind with the #10 grid (use the #12 for celery, ginger and turmeric). Put about 1.5 cups of pulp in the center of a cloth or bag and fold the cloth tic-tac-toe style so all the pulp stays inside. Stack one to three cloths in the press. Run the press at full speed until it reaches the cloths, then slow to about half speed and increase pressure gently. Release when the juice stream breaks, fold the cloths in half, and press again.
  • Choose your grid. The juicer came with eight grids, from 2.5 mm to 12 mm. The grid number is the hole size in millimeters.
    • #2: coffee and fine grinding
    • #3: smooth nut butter, baby food and purée
    • #4: chunky nut butter, smooth pesto
    • #5: berries
    • #6: non-fibrous produce and fibrous greens
    • #8: non-fibrous produce
    • #10: big batches, fibrous and non-fibrous produce
    • #12: big batches and fibrous greens
  • If the grid clogs, move up to the next grid size. A good sign of a clogged grid is that you have to push harder. It helps to keep two or three spare grids so you can swap a clogged one and keep juicing.
  • Ginger and turmeric: clean the grid after every 1.5 cups so it does not get stuck.
  • Leafy greens: fold the leaves in half, stem side up, and tap the pusher gently. Liners are optional, and recommended if you are juicing only spinach.
  • Celery: grind into a bowl with a strainer on top to drain off some of the water before pressing.
  • Citrus: no grid needed. Slice lemons or limes almost all the way through, put two lemons or four limes in a press bag, seam up, and press. The fruit stays in one piece, so cleanup is easy.
  • Preventing kickback:
    1. Use the smallest practical grid, usually the #8 or #10.
    2. If you get kickback, stop each push about 1/2 inch from the bottom. This forms a plug. Push all the way down only on the last push.
    3. For carrots, cover the top of the feed tube with your palm and feed produce between your thumb and forefinger.
    4. For greens, fold them in half and use a bunch big enough to fill the feed tube.
  • Running the press ("feathering"). The press rises fast, in about 14 seconds. To prevent overflow, slow it down when the juice flows hardest. Point the handle to 12 o'clock to stop the press, and between 12 and 1 o'clock to find the speed you want. There is no time limit at full pressure.
  • Big batches. The three-cloth method makes about 2 liters in under 30 minutes: partially press one cloth of pulp, add a second on top, partially press again, add a third, then press all three at full pressure for 60 to 90 seconds until the juice stream breaks.
  • Cloth or bag? Press cloths are best for large amounts. Lay the open cloth in a lasagna pan so the ground produce falls straight onto it. Press bags hang from the grid tray, so you can grind straight into the bag. It is a matter of personal preference.
  • Storing juice. Green juice: 12 to 24 hours. Carrot, apple and other non-green juices: 24 to 72 hours. To freeze juice for later, see the founder's video on freezing juice.
  • Damp pulp? If your pulp is wetter than usual, contact us and ask for "the carrot test."

Care and maintenance

Everyday cleaning

  • The food-contact parts are stainless steel. The feed tube, grid tray and grids can go in the dishwasher, or wash them with soap and water.
  • To remove the feed tube, push the button on the side and turn it counterclockwise. Then remove the grid tray and the grid.
  • Cutters: the straight cutter (304 stainless) is dishwasher safe. Hand wash the serrated cutter (440c stainless) and wipe it dry; do not put it in the dishwasher. If tannin build-up appears on a serrated cutter, see the restoration video; wiping it daily with hydrogen peroxide helps prevent it.
  • After juicing, give the groove at the base a quick spray-down.

O-rings

Keep a spray bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide. To remove the O-ring, squeeze it together at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions and stretch it out. Clean the groove and remove any vegetable bits. Spray the groove and the O-ring, then put the O-ring back. O-rings rarely need replacement, but they are a good spare to keep.

Press cloths and bags

  • Day to day: rinse and scrub in cold water. Some people soak briefly first with a little soap or hydrogen peroxide; if you use soap, rinse until the water runs clear. Wash bags inside out.
  • Storage: refold the clean cloths, stack them on the juice tray, and use the press to squeeze the water out (have a container ready to catch it). Put them in a zip-lock bag in the freezer until next time. If they freeze stuck together, rinse them in warm water.
  • When to deep clean: when juice starts to spurt from the cloth at or near full pressure, the pores are clogging. If you juice every day, plan on a deep clean about every two months.
  • How to deep clean, from mildest to strongest:
    • OxiClean, 2 to 3 tablespoons per gallon, soak overnight and rinse
    • Hydrogen peroxide (5 to 6%) with 1 tablespoon of baking soda per gallon, soak overnight and rinse
    • Line dry in the sun to lighten stains
    • Bleach, 3 to 4%, soak overnight and rinse thoroughly. Bleach gives off fumes; use it outside or in a well-ventilated room and do not breathe them in.
    • Or wash in the washing machine with OxiClean or bleach and run a long rinse cycle
  • How many and how long: keep 6 to 12 cloths and 2 bags in rotation; more cloths means less frequent cleaning. Cloths last about 6 to 12 months (about 200 uses), depending on use and care.

Cutters and sharpening

  • How often: the straight cutter usually needs sharpening once or twice a year, depending on use. The serrated cutter needs it much less often, every few years. The skip-tooth cutter is hardened to stay sharp for years without sharpening.
  • How to tell: if you have to push harder and harder, the cutter may be dull. Look at the leading edge of a tooth: the corner where the face meets the top should be crisp and straight, not rounded or chipped. If you are not sure, email us a photo.
  • Do it yourself: sharpening with a file and vise takes some mechanical skill. Watch the sharpening video first. If you have never used a file, send the cutter to PURE instead.
  • Do not adjust the cutter set screw. Each cutter is preset at the factory. If you think it needs adjusting, contact us and we will show you how.
  • Stuck cutter? See the video on removing a stuck cutter. It uses the grid tray; no extra parts are needed.

Good to know

  • The cutter keeps turning while you press. That is normal: the same motor drives the hydraulic pump.
  • Motor shuts off? The motor has built-in thermal protection. If it overheats, it turns itself off and will not restart until it cools, about half an hour.
  • Scratches on the pusher happen while you learn to center it in the feed tube. They go away with practice.
  • Lift kit: raises the juicer 1 inch (25 mm) for easier cleaning underneath and room for more pulp in the bowl. Installation takes about 15 minutes with a #2 Phillips screwdriver.
  • Press plate style: if you order a spare press plate, check your serial number. Juicers up to serial AH06 (including AF and AG serials) use the early style. AH07 and later (including AI and BA serials) use the late style.
